    Default Voluntaryists vs Socialists

This was a Voluntaryist vs Socialist debate held recently at the Libertalia Cafe in San Diego. The debate was not about what form of government should exist, but whether or not government should exist at all.

Representing the Anarchist team: Joseph Corbett and Joey Hill

Representing the Socialist team: Herb Shore and Gregg Robinson

    Thanks for posting.

Blimey, is 27 separate videos really needed? Some of them are only a couple of mins long, im sure it could of been squashed into 10 clips if they have tried.

    The reason they gave was:

This is a 27 part series of short clips so you can navigate the debate easily, like on a DVD.

I thought that the anarchists did quite well and I agreed with them more than the social democrats on most arguments. However, I felt slightly bewildered on their response to the most important question put to them by an audience member on this point:

I don't see how this work. As far as I can see, it would just end in a chain of retaliation and spread into chaos.

The part of his reply in which he explained how damning the river upstream would violate property rights was pretty good (rivers are owned much like that in the UK already, and there is probably a whole bunch of common law precedent for handling disputes just like that described). After that, the question ceases, really, to be about owning rivers and more about what would happen when one person violates the rights of another. My answer would be, if the disputants could not settle it amicably, then, well that's what the legal system is for.
