Not hard to follow is it! To much is made of the UK's independent nuclear deterrent. We don’t actually have one as it's controlled by the USA. As for the Liberal party given its internal democracy if a large number of Libertarians joined the party they could change it into a Libertarian party

It would be of tactical benefits for the Libertarians to take over the Liberal party.

I despise Libertarianism but if I was a Libertarian that is what I would do. Return the Liberal party to Classical Liberal.

Actually, I am a classical liberal. Liberal Party economic policy is currently somewhat to the left of what it would be if I were writing it myself from scratch, but having only just switched my support to the party a few months ago I'm not about to try to change it. And I wouldn't dream of trying to engineer the kind of takeover you describe! I like the Liberal Party as it is, and think it may have a great future, but if the differences between my economic views and party policy ever became uncomfortable to me, then I'd simply go over to the Libertarian Party instead. |

Here is the updated list of Liberal Party councillor numbers, taking into account the recent defection of Cllr Ann Hines in Liverpool from the LibDems. Of course this list is accurate only for the next two weeks - after that, we'll just have to see. (Where is a fingers crossed smiley when you need one?)
County Councillors Worcestershire County Council: 2 Cornwall County Council: 1 District, Borough and City Councillors Wyre Forest District Council: 7 (the Liberal group is the 3rd strongest on council, bigger than Labour or the LibDems) Exeter City Council: 4 Liverpool City Council: 4 (one defected from LibDems 2 weeks ago) Peterborough City Council: 3 Torridge District Council: 3 (all of whom defected from LibDems in August) Slough Borough Council: 3 Ryedale District Council: 1 Kerrier District Council: 1 Gateshead Council: 1 Wolverhampton City Council: 1 Total: 28 district, borough or city councillors, and 3 county councillors. Incidentally, as well as the scheduled May 1st elections, we'll be contesting some byelections on the same day. These include a council seat in Bournemouth, I believe. |
