Benedict Brogan wrote in today's Daily Mail (brief extract): "And with their new leader only squeaking past his rival, the charge will be that he (Clegg) has no mandate to speak of. And Mr. Clegg must contend with growing doubts about his leadership qualities after a campaign that noticeably failed to show drive, energy or inspiration."

Given what an **** Clegg made of himself on Newsnight, I wouldn't be surprised if he did in fact, lose votes to Cameron.

Actually, I believe the media kept away from this contest in the main. It's like local elections, with Dimbleby talking of low turnouts. Well, well! The truth is that it all has to be "promoted". Perhaps we should allow political advertising on TV instead of the present rather tawdry approach to money raising and spending as we have it.

I don't like Clegg and I don't think the way he comes across on television impresses many voters.

Some people on the media seem to think that Vincent Cable MP (the temporary leader of the Liberal Dims while their latest leadership contest was taking place) did a good job (as temporary leader).

I thought Vince Cable was authoritative for a Lib Dem leader. He seemed to strike a chord with the media too.

I certainly prefer him to Clegg. The general view is that Mr. Cable has had a very successful couple of months as temporary leader of his party. I wonder if Mr. Cable will be the next leader of the Liberal Dims when the voters see through Clegg?

As Clegg has won a proper leadership contest, I imagine he'll lead the LidDem's into the next General Election (unless he screws up on a truly epic scale before then, which seems unlikely). However, he doesn't look very inspiring so far, and I wonder whether in a couple of years time we'll be referring to Clegg rather than Cable as the "temporary leader of his party."?
