The Liberal Democrats today branded ministers delusional, following the Government's response to the Work and Pensions Select Committee's seventh report into benefit simplification.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Danny Alexander MP said:
"This response is clear evidence that the Government is unwilling to face up to the reality of our hugely complex benefits system. Britain has one of the most complex and confusing welfare systems in the world.
"It is patently delusional to claim to want to simplify the system, accept that means-testing is a source of complexity and then still refuse to do anything about it.
"Labour's obsession with means-testing is deeply damaging, by reducing people's incentives to save for themselves and leaving many in poverty. It is frankly astonishing that ministers refuse to accept the need for radical simplification of our welfare system."
