Following a statement on the Clostridium Difficile outbreak in the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals NHS Trust, the Liberal Democrats today called on the Government to urgently examine the link between high levels of bed occupancy and infection outbreaks. Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary, Norman Lamb MP said: "The Government has today admitted to a shocking lack of action in the face of this deadly infection. "Why did it take so long for effective action to be taken against the hospital trust, given that the Healthcare Commission was aware of the problem for well over a year? "What is being done to probe the link between high levels of bed occupancy and the ability to deal with infection outbreaks? It is very difficult to isolate infected patients when all hospital beds are running at bursting point. "Preventing and swiftly dealing with superbug outbreaks must be every hospital's top priority."
