Commenting on today’s publication of the Foundation Stage Profile of primary school pupils, showing one in seven struggles to write their own name after a year of primary school, Liberal Democrat Shadow Children, Schools and Families Secretary, David Laws MP said:
"These figures are deeply disturbing.
"By the end of their first year at school, all children should have the basic skills, which up to half of them presently lack.
"There is a yawning gulf between children from deprived backgrounds and the rest, which undermines education from the very earliest stages."
