Commenting ahead of today’s expected announcement from John Denham that every secondary school in England is to be partnered with a university as part of a drive to widen participation in higher education, Liberal Democrat Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary, Sarah Teather MP said: "This proposal will only go some way to achieving the worthy aim of getting more working class students at university. "The reality is that breaking down the barriers stopping people reaching higher education is not only about raising the aspirations of young people but enabling them to get better results. "The divisive gap in educational achievement begins long before secondary school. Unless this scandalous inequality is tackled, pairing up universities with schools will only serve to highlight what children from poorer backgrounds are missing out on. "The Liberal Democrats’ ‘pupil premium’ would target an extra £1.5bn at the children in most need of extra support, to combat this entrenched disadvantage." More... |
