Poll: 40% of Lib Dim Party supporters & 67% of voters think they are a protest vote

A Populus poll for today's Times (published at the start of the annual Conference of the europhile Liberal Dims in Brighton) suggests that two thirds of voters - including two fifths of Lib Dim Party supporters - think that "they (the Liberal 'Democrats') are basically a protest vote party and that their policies probably don’t really add up."

Brief extract from today's Times: "Linda Jack, a member of the party’s policy committee, joined the attack last night when she said that Sir Menzies had been “over-promoted”. She said: “Someone can be a brilliant man and have incredible intellectual powers and all the rest of it but if that does not translate into leadership skills then whoever your leader is you have got a problem with them.”

Now there is an opportunity- if 40% of LibDem voters could be persuaded to move their 'protest' vote to a libertarian Eurosceptic party then the political map could change quite markedly. The problem, I would guess,is coming over as decent chaps.

You and I have often commented on how people would not vote for the Europhile Lib Dems if they knew what they really stood for. This poll would certainly be evidence of that.

As for Mr Campbell, I think they would have moved on the leadership if they didnt think there will be a GE within the next year.

Yes, I agree. If it became even clearer to many voters that the europhile Liberal Dims are just the political arm of the EU in the UK support for the Liberal Dims would slump at the polls.

I have Sir Menzies Campbell on the television at the moment (BBC Parliament Lib Dim party coverage). Polite reception for him from the conference delegates - but not an enthusiastic one.
