Lord Owen says europhile Liberal Dims need younger leader

Lord (David) Owen, the former Foreign Secretary in the Callaghan Labour Government and one of the 'Gang of Four' ex-Labour politicians who set up the europhile Social Democrats in 1981, has said in an interview with Parliamentary Monitor Magazine that Sir Menzies Campbell should be replaced as leader of the pro-EU Liberal 'Democrats' (the party the Social Democrats merged into).

'Chris' Huhne :x :evil: , the wealthy former MEP who now sits in the Commons as MP for Eastleigh with a small majority over the Conservatives, should be the new leader Lord Owen said.

Lord Owen (69) added "The Liberal 'Democrats' should be led by a young Turk. Sir Menzies Campbell is only a couple of years younger than me."

When the Social 'Democrats' joined up with the Liberals to form the Liberal 'Democrats', Lord Owen was the only one of the 'Gang of Four' who didn't become a member of the merged party.

Britannist adds: I've got no time for the fanatically pro-EU Liberal Dims, but it is wrong of Lord Owen to insinuate that Sir Menzies Campbell is too old to lead a party. I am not politically correct, but this looks like it might be ageist. We should be against the policies of Sir Menzies, not his age.

It is surprising that Lord Owen recommends the committed europhile Huhne :evil: to be leader of the Liberal 'Democrats'. Lord Owen is against

the euro and was on television the other week criticising France for using the EU to try to undermine NATO. Huhne (who came third in the last Liberal 'Democrat' leadership contest) is (unlike Lord Owen) in favour of the euro :evil:

and more 'european integration' :x as he calls it.

Leave poor old Ming alone ! He's doing a great job, you hardly ever hear of the Liberal Dumbocrats nowadays.
