Default Key donor to europhile Lib Dims caged by Southwark Court

Bad news for the europhile Liberal ‘Democrats’ is good news for everyone else:

From ITV 1 Teletext, page 309, 25.9.2006 at 6.16 pm

‘Liberal Dem donor jailed’

The Liberal Dems biggest donor has been jailed for two years for what a judge branded “very deliberate” dishonesty.

Flamboyant Glasgwegian financier Michael Brown, 40, gave false details in an affidavit and then tricked authorities into giving him a new passport.

The bonds trader, whose £2.4 million political gift helped the party’s election bid, was eventually arrested in Majorca London’s Southwark Crown Court heard.

The Lib Dems have sought to distance themselves from their disgraced biggest donor, insisting they acted “properly” in all dealings with Michael Brown.

A spokesman said there was “no connection” between the party and the financier’s offences – which have seen him receive a two-year jail sentence.

Regulators had assured them a £2.4 million donation made by Brown’s company ahead of the 2005 election was “permissable”.

* The biased pro-EU and pro-Liberal Dim BBC have not reported this important news story on their own Ceefax (equivalent of ITV 1 Teletext) service.

If it was £2,400 or £24,000 or just conceivably even £240,000 does anyone not think the Lib Dems would make a 'principled' decision that the donation was inappropriate and in order to ensure that noone could question the propriety of the party the donation would be returned or given to a charity. A £2,400,000 donation though is 'permissable' and things have been done 'properly' so that is alright then!

But the watchdog later found it was "permissible" for the party to have accepted the cash from his UK-based company 5th Avenue Partners.

Mr Brown later said he gave the money because he believed in then leader Charles Kennedy's ability as a future prime minister "but not the muppets who purport to serve him".
Oh he's not that bad then. Probably saw Rab C Nesbit and Kennedy reminded him of the laughs he got from him.

Default Lib Dims to lose seats at next General Election

A most witty reply 8) .

It was a mistake of Mr. Brown to give the europhile Liberal Dims a single penny.

But, at least, without a large donor at the next General Election they (Campbell's Fiberal Dims) are going to have big problems holding many of the seats they presently hold in the Commons - quite apart from the fact that they are set to lose some seats as the anti-Iraq 'war' protest vote (which boosted Liberal Dim support at the last General Election) returns (mostly) to Labour.

It's good news for UKIP - especially in the south-west of England. As the electoral position of the Fiberal Dims weakens in Devon/Cornwall/Somerset/Wiltshire and parts of Gloucestershire - UKIP should be 'moving in' to target Liberal Dim-held constituencies with proper, targeted campaigning.
