Sky news. The 'off to join Mandelson' bit is just a guess.

New Labour will, of course, look after him handsomely - his resignation is just a part of their manoeuvering to keep long-term control.

He'll be back. Already blaming the press like a gangster blaming those who grassed them up.

An Aitken moment I think, sword of truth and shield of fair play, of course they have more control over the law these days so he'll get off before any charges are laid.

Besides, he's done exactly the same thing as Gordon Brown, Hain goes, Brown stays.

Indeed, where most tainted politicians tend to go, he'll end up in Brussels, in the EU, it seems to be the dustbin of the corrupt, the criminal and the ineffective.

Good question.

It is with enormous pleasure that I heard of his resignation . Politically, this is some of the best news since Mandelson and Charles Clarke left the Government. Like those two, Hain is a rampant europhile.

This man Hain wrote a book highly critical of the EU, the euro and the EU threat to our liberties in 1996 - but turned pro-EU after appointment to the europhile Blair Labour Government.

In 2003 the awful UKIP-hating Hain told anti-euro protesters to "pack up your placards and go home."

It is an insult to the British people that he was made a minister and Blair and Labour insulted the good folk of Northern Ireland and Wales by later making him Secretary of State for both of those parts of the UK.

I hope that he never gets back into the Cabinet - but I have my doubts. Europhile Mandelson returned to Government after his first 'resignation'.

It is alleged that Hain is not the most popular person in the Labour Party - certainly his poor fifth place in last year's Labour Deputy leadership contest points to that claim being correct.

Default Mandelson, retire, EU Commissioner, vacancy, UK EU Commissioner, Labour

Mandelson said last year that he will not retire from the EU Commission when his current term as an EU Commissioner comes to an end. So there will be a vacancy for a new UK EU Commissioner and s/he will come from the governing party in the UK. And, unles there is a General Election next year, that party will definitely be Labour.
