It was a mistake for David Cameron to urge Conservative MPs to stand up and give Blair a standing ovation (on Blair's last appearance in the House of Commons). Apart from anything else, Labour would never do the same for a Conservative Prime Minister.

I think some Conservatives were jubilant at Blair's departure from the Commons (hence their participation in the standing ovation) thinking that it would lead to a new political era in which the Cameron-Conservatives moved into a big opinion poll lead.

So far, the exact reverse has happened.

Did I hear that Galloway is changing seats at the next election?

Does anyone think that if Cameron promised to leave the EU if the Conservatives won the next GE, the Tories would actually win the next GE?

Nope, Cameron's got little, if any credibility left.

Default Michael Foot, Labour leader, Labour Party Manifesto 1983, EEC/EU, sham renegotiation

Michael Foot, as Labour leader, made the claim that he would take the UK out of the EEC/EU in the Labour Party Manifesto of 1983 - but I never believed him. I was quite convinced that had Labour won that election it would not have kept the promise (i.e. there would have been another sham so-called 'renogotiation' of the UK membership terms of the EEC/EU).

Default George Galloway MP, 'Jim' Fitzpatrick, Tower Hamlets, seat, constituency, Iraq 'war'

Yes, you heard correctly. Leftist and europhile Galloway is keeping his promise not to contest the seat he now holds at the next General Election - he is going to fight the constituency right next door to the one he presently represents instead.

He will come up against 'Jim' Fitzpatrick, a Labour MP whom Galloway has criticised for supporting the Iraq 'war' and for closing down a large number of Post Offices. Fitzpatrick's seat (altered by boundary changes) has a nominal Labour majority but not the highest in the country - it will also include a significant Conservative vote in the redeveloped Docklands areas.

George Galloway MP has the advantage of being well known in Fitzpatrick's constituency - it is in the same borough of Tower Hamlets as the seat he presently holds and local newspapers cover both constituencies meaning that Fitzpatrick's constituents will have read about the local work of Mr. Galloway many times. In fact, some of them might already think he is their MP.

Of course Foot's support of Nuclear Disarmement made him unlectable in any case at a time when the Cold War was at its height.
