Chancellor Brown denies plot to sack europhile Tessa Jowell
A spokesman for Labour Government Chancellor Gordon Brown denied a report in the Mail on Sunday on 26.11.2006 that he (Mr. Brown) would sack europhile Tessa Jowell MP, the ‘Culture’ Minister in the Blair regime in charge of organising the 2012 London Olympics.
The Mail on Sunday claimed Brown regards Jowell as too lightweight. (Ref. 5223) The Mail also said “Brown has long been wary of Miss Jowell, mainly because of her support for Tony Blair. She was among a small band of Blairites who persuaded the Prime Minister to abandon stepping down in 2004 in favour of Mr. Brown.”
It was claimed that Brown is concerned that a cost overrun on the London Olympics could damage his alleged reputation for managing the economy efficiently. Bob Glendinning wrote on the readers' comments board on the Mail website on 26.11.2006 “Most Ministers appear too lightweight for their jobs, that’s why the Country is in such a mess!”
