Default Lukeair

Hi. My name is Luke. I live in the Highlands, near Inverness and I work for the Ministry of Defence. I'd like to make a few points:

If we're as confused as we are about our own identity/nationality, why are we surprised that there are socialistic entities that want to take away what little freedom we have left.

I hear people refer to England and the English on this the 'British' Democracy Forum. I am English. Living in Scotland I am constantly reminded of this. I was born in the county of Durham to English parents. However, in case it escaped your notice, England and Scotland, under the Acts of Union, 1706 and 1707, united into one nation - the United Kingdom. Those dual acts havent, as far as I know, yet been repealed; although Scotland has virtually declared itself unilaterally independant.

At the moment, England is ruled by a Scottish cartel. A Scottish prime minister, a Scottish chancellor and a Scottish Defence Secretary. England doesn't have a government. Scotland does have its own government, its own parliament and its own Prime (First) Minister. It also governs England. English MP's have no say in the governance of Scotland and neither do Scottish MP's. Scottish voters elect Scottish MP's who then move south to Westminster to govern England.

Up here in Scotland the people laugh and mock at the pathetic English. They delight that you are so stupid that you allow yourself to be governed by a 'foreign' nation while they govern themselves. England has already been abolished and yet you pretend to be concerned about your absorbtion into the European Empire.

Nice one. In wholehearted agreement with your post.

Your precious 'Parliament' and 'Independent' nation can be repealed tomorrow, by English MPs in the British Parliament.

Oh right, like that's gonna happen. So the fact we are ruled by an twice - unelected scot isn't a problem to you?

Plus if Scotland did leave the UK and sign to be member of the EU then your so called Scottish independence will vanish!.

I admit it's not likely. It's still possible.

The fact the Prime Minister is Scottish doesn't bother me. The Scottish put up with Thatcher and Major didn't they, not to mention all the other English PMs in history.

As for the West Lothian question - yes it bothers me - a lot. However, I haven't seen an adequate solution.

An English Parliament would lead to three results that I can see:

1) An English Parliament largely mimicks the British Parliament, since the latter is also dominated by English MPs.

2) An English Parliament leads to massive imbalance in the Union and claims legitimacy over the British Parliament, England goes independent.

3) An English Parliament leads to a Federal State.

None of these options are desirable. I am also not convinced that an English Parliament would serve certain areas of England very well - such as the South West - which has been neglected by Westminster for a long time.

If we're really going to go for a Federal State, I'd much rather that the 'regions' of England got assemblies/parliaments.

Either that, or County Councils get a lot more devolved power.

While I would not agree with some English nationalists on the use of the term "Scots Raj", I do recognise that the establishment tend to favour and support Scots and Irish cohesive national Identity over English identity. Maybe English herself is a powerful nation that might get out of control under the Union if nationalism runs deep among English.

Like all PMs, they were elected as MPs.
Their party elevated them to to party leader.
Brown, Blair, Major, Thatcher, Callaghan, Heath, Wilson, Douglas-Home, Macmillan.....same for them all.
Blair was no more unelected than Europhile Ted Heath.
