I am an Englishman, with a deep love for my country, its history and its proud heritage.

Growing up, my father taught me about respect, responsibility and the value of hard work. My mother taught me compassion, tolerance and consideration for others. My grandfather fought in the Second World War as part of the Corps of Royal Engineers. He taught me about duty to my country, innovation, adaptability and ingenuity, about art and design, about business and industry. My grandmother taught me wisdom and knowledge, and gave me a great love of literature. All of them combined taught me about love and family. Those are the great qualities of England in my opinion, that will always trump the shallow politically correct amalgamation called Britishness. Even that term tells you who is it really good for: politically correct, right for politicians, and not for the people.

I am not by any means a racist, and view equal opportunity as a positive force in our society as long as it is not biased, or spun into creating voting issues. Tolerance and equality are radically different from and much more positive and unifying that diversity can ever be; and nationalism is not the same thing as racism. National pride should be cherished in the same way that racism should be condemned; knowing our nation's history, great figures and folklore gives us our sense of national identity, not a politician's marketing campaigns.

I do not believe for one moment that any of the people of Great Britain have lost their greatness, or that Britain has lost its capacity to be the one of the foremost nations in the world to value liberty, peace, prosperity, tolerance and democracy. After all, democracy means “voice of the people”, and this is what I hope will soon re-awaken in Britain.

Good to see another new member - and one who is English too.

I'll be interested to see in due course which you side you take on the Union (as in the Uk): status quo versus nationhood status for the home nations of the UK.

No confusion whatsoever, and no need to work on it. It's a very deliberate choice.

If anyone asks me what nationality I am, I say English. If I ever refer to myself as British again, it won't be the pseudo-British claptrap that comes out of Westminster. In the same way that they say our national flags have been co-opted by fascists and racists, they have co-opted British to refer to something very different from what it did ten years ago. When I see it now, it means "Prepared and Ready to join the EU". I used to be proud to be British, but they have sullied that. Their treatment and ignorance of the public disgusts me, as does their shattering of the military covenant.

When they are gone from office and Great Britain is back on the road to recovery as an independent set of nations, I'll be happy to use that term again.

As far as I'm concerned, my country is Great Britain, which encompasses all of the Home Nations, and praises all the achievements each has contributed over the centuries of our combined history. To say the English have driven and accomplished everything within our great land is unfair and untrue, and mocks the accomplishments and sacrifices of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
