My wife is American [a Wolverine girl] and was woefully ignorant of European history when she first came over here to study.
I have just asked her about Jackson and her reply was ' the man who made the presidency the presidents'.

Buggered if I know what she meant as I am as woefully ignorant of US history as she is of European, apart from where it impinged on the Empire. The Cambridge University 'O' level history syllabus seemed to stop mentioning the US after 1776, almost as if in a fit of pique!

Hartlepool:

We did learn some world history, from Mesopotamia to Greece to Rome to the Middle Ages and so forth.

Our focus was an American history and world history in relation to its effect on American culture... we definately did not learn as much European history as we should have.

For example:
The US purchase of the Louisiana Terrority from France (Aka, the "Lousiana Purchase")--a major terroritorial gain for the United States obtained through diplomatic means. We learned about that....

...but what we DIDN'T talk about... was that the reason we were able to buy the Louisiana Territory in the first place is that Napoleon needed money to finance his wars in Europe!

I had to find that out on my own... which made me realize that... to truly understand history, you have to understand it both "vertically" (chronologically) and "horizonally" (geographically)... because all events have both a time and a place.

The strange thing is I now see that their's a third dimension to looking at history
and that is economically but that's along story so I'll leave it for now.

Who you voting for.

In the US presidential election?

I'm voting for Mitt Romney.... if I can. Because (1) he's run the smartest presidential campaign that I have seen in my lifetime, and (2) he has integrity.

Yes, I know that Romney halted his campagn... really irritating, as all of the other major candidates are weak.... but we haven't even finished the primaries yet, so let's see what happens.

Romney is the first non-third party candidate for president to get my support since I've been old enough to vote. If he doesn't get back in the race somehow, then I'll have to look for a 3rd party candidate to support again. (Arrrr, if only we reformed the election system so that 3rd party candidates had a fair chance of being elected!)

Easy. Just because we understand how full of s*** some of these people are doesn't mean every one else does. I grew up thinking socialism was a great idea because-

Freedom is slavery.
War is peace etc...

The truth is i'm a libertarian but through my up bringing I associated socialism with freedom. I've said before socialism does the exact opposite of what it claims to.

So if you want change you need to wake those who have been in the giant prison we call earth. They in turn can wake their friends and so the chain reaction starts, well we hope any way.

Benjamin. If you read this please stay with us you might be shocked at some of the things you find out about those the media always claimed were your friend.

I guessed that there were Ron Paul fans on here merely by the general style and atmosphere.

I like Ron Paul's positions on things. He is a better candidate then most.

And Mitt Romney does have integrity. I've researched it. He doesn't lie or BS, but rather markets his positions in a way that is both honest and appeals to his target audience. It's very smart actually. But that is something to discuss in another thread.
