That's because it IS an RFID tag and our passport details can also be read by hackers a few feet away in the street.

Have a look in your local supermarket on products priced over around £5 they have RFID tags on the sides of the packaging. This is just the start of it!

Whereabouts in the SW counties do you live?

Sure. I remember your posts and felt they were being quite harsh with the moderation. I stuck with them though and tried to subtly influence things and demonstrate better ways of getting along with the public, and especially those that were quite anti-authoritarian people. It's improved from those days and the interest and dedication of people has improved. I know that because they no longer beg for cash, so I guess they have figured things out and learnt something. Even Guy Herbert was at an anti EU talk hosted somewhere near the City of London a while back! That made me laugh and I think the only one who still has a bit of a bee in his bonnet from time to time is Geraint. There is certainly a merging of different protest groups going on and it's all good. Strength in numbers sort of thing.

Cool

Has anyone actually tried hacking these passport chips? You can make yourself a diplomat and no-one can search your luggage!

Yes. NO2ID techies and co-conspirators had a go. I think it took about a day to do it and they arranged some demonstrations. The idiots at the department had a password on the chip that could be figured out by combining the person's date of birth with so many figures on the passport number and a couple of other things. They managed to read someone's passport chip from about 30 feet away using a wireless repeater link.

What I was working on a few years ago is worse.

3 foot door way 100% read

6 foot doorway 99% read

Standard 6'6" doorway 90 odd % unless you went down the centre very poor.

If I have to have it I won't take the risk of being scammed, I will delidratley destroy the chip part!

I have no objections to an ID card, but would rather insert into a machine (policemans radio etc) for it to be cross referanced with the enquirers details before information is released.

Not there for all and sundry to pick up out of the air as you walk past!

Yes that is one problem but like the cost argument it does not address the real reason for these ID cards. You see, the ID card is the only really visible part of it but behind that will be an electronic surveillance and data collection system linked into the running of the country, where things will change for you in a way not previously seen. Just to give one example of this, look at what has happened to the business of driving a car down the road with one single data acquisition system, that being a speed measuring device. Look at what they did there and then extrapolate to the point of what could they do if every aspect of your life was recorded and indexed on your ID card. It's all about control but this control is not likely to be for your benefit. Not when they do things like pass a law enabling them to pass laws without an act of parliament. It's your democracy at stake here.
