Default PUNISHMENT FOR MINOR CRIME

How about a little humiliation. This would be particularly useful as a punishment for minor misdemeanours and anti social behaviour. Erect a modern form of the stocks and have the guilty party sit in them for a few days. They cannot hide from their guilt and it would be very public. Also the parents of any child under 18 when the offence was committed should automatically be an accessory to the crime and share a least in part in the punishment for failuer to raise their offspring in a correct manner. What do you think?

My reply: Can I be the first to welcome you to the Forum, Colin.
Regarding you comments above - may I recommend that the first person to be put in your proposed stocks is someone by the name of 'Tony' B-liar who is guilty of the offence of transferring British Sovereign powers from Westminster to Brussels   .

Yes. I'm all for naming and shaming.
I don't doubt that it would be effective for those who will feel shame.
But I think there are those who just might see it as a kind of badge of honour. A display to their peers of how macho they can be.
Maybe I'm just a cynic.

I was in Windsor,Connecticut,US in about 1987.A guy was showing me around the place and in one area/suburb we saw a pickup with a cage full of teenagers being backed INTO phpbb_a car park bay next to a small shopping strip. There were about 10 or so in the cage.

The guy told me it was a local law used to display those who tried to buck the system by damaging property, truancy and stuff of that level or more.

Kids were about 11 to 18 or so.

When we came back after about 2 hours or so every one of them was trying to hide under the straw they were sitting on,a lot of their parents were in attendance and openly chastising them all.

This was on a Saturday afternoon, they had spent the morning down at the jail being lectured and the afternoon being on show, messing up their weekend.

The guy told me the first time they resorted to these tactics more than 150 kids were enrolled and after that the numbers and most local problems dropped dramatically each week.

Only problem I see with this method if you were dealing with a "Gang" the gang would recognize the faces of the people who humiliated them so at a future date they may well seek vengeance!

The way it was explained to me was nothing was said to those on display, people walked past looking at the inhabitants of the cage with the Deputy explaining their reasons for being caged.

I did see some small kids mocking them though but they were only about 7 or 8 years old and they were told off for doing it.
