Chris,

there are a couple of linked issues here. One is the fish, the other the fishermen and the impact on their families.

Lets face it, the UK fishing industry is totally F*****. I remember (you wouldn't, probably, as I assume you are not a mature student) when many small towns and villages had fishing fleets made up of relatively small boats. Of course,we also had large boats travelling further, but here I'm referring to the 2 or 3 man boat, often father and sons as crew, who would catch a small amount FAIRLY AND SUSTAINABLY and bring it back to port.

This is basically gone. The fish are gone. Our close-in stocks have been decimated by indiscrimate trawling by foreign boats.

The livelihood of thousands are affected by this.

Of course, fish can swim where they like, but actually a lot of them like it inshore (i.e within the continental shelf) quite a lot of the time - especially flat fish and bottom feeders like Cod. (I'm not a fish expert if there are inaccuracies in this!)

The EU has known of our declining fish stock and the effect of intensive trawling on the fish stocks for many years (I covered it in a degree course in 1980!). Have they done anything?

Now a question for you - why do you think that is?
