Isn't it weird how only 22% of the North East people voted for an Assembly, yet they keep showing up on political discussion forums?

I would have voted no. It had no power, was proposed by a smarmy Labour government, proposed to abolish district councils` in Northumberland and County Durham and would have been a massive white elephant. What people need is real accountable devolution. London has it, Wales has it, why can't we?

London is a glorified city council, Wales is a nation. And that was the point - it was national devolution offered in 1999, but not to the English nation.

I'm not against more local powers, but it must be under an English parliament. The trouble with those who want regional devolution is that they have no concern over England

Are you claiming that the majority voted 'no' because they are of the same mind as you and want "real accountable devolution"? If that is the case, maybe you can offer some evidence to support your claim.

What does "real accountable devolution" mean? Does it mean your own treasury supported by taxes raised in the Republic of Northumbria, or whatever it may be called? Alternatively, does it actually mean keeping a hand in the common wealth chest of England?

What happens to the common wealth of England if all the little 'regionalists' get their way?

If you were talking about Northumbria leaving the UK, you would get my vote. Maybe join up with Scotland as you leave?

Why do I have no concern for England? The point of devolution is to offer recognizable government for the area it is in. I don't see how having a north east assembly makes people any less British or English. Rather it recognises the difference in the north east. Why should the berwick borders to cornwall to inner city Manchester to Hampshire have the same need? An English assembly would do nothing to help address the north south divide and would mean the north east has a continues Tory government yet voting overwhelmingly for labour and the lib dens. The region would be being governed from london. Who knows better about our community?

It's like in the age referendum it was a newsletter compromise no one wanted. Even yes supporters of the regional assembly states it would be a stepping stone. The Welsh assembly was also rejected by a similiar margin in heir first referendum.
