The Digital Economy Bill is one of the few pieces of legislation the government is actively pushing through parliament before an election is called.
Its aim is to build Britain's telecommunications backbone and to pave the way for a world-beating digital economy - an admirable objective with cross-party support.

Yet lurking within this worthy endeavour is some of the most dangerous and misguided legislation to have come before parliament in recent years.
Incredibly, the Bill effectively gives music labels and film studios the right to instruct internet service providers, such as TalkTalk, to cut off the internet connection of anyone that the labels and studios suspect of copyright infringement.

They don't have to prove it in a court of law or to an impartial third party. The onus is on the customer to prove their innocence.

Encryption and peer blocking will defeat this.

Not 100% foolproof, but it means 2% get done, instead of 100%

Combined with encryption, they haven't got a chance.

    lets hear it for blocklist
and now seriously copyright we've been here before in the 70's with the "hometaping is killing music and it's illegal" campaign which really worked as the entertainment companies all went bust and no new artists were launched.
This from companies who routinely charge dollar/sterling parity for product and rip off the consumer. EMI have just re-released the Beatles back catalogue for the umpteenth time at a premium price again, how much money will they make this time.
During the vinyl years the quality of the vinyl used on some records was f*cking abysmal, popped and scratched from day one and indeed some pressings were notoriously bad but try getting your money back

    welcome to the RIPOFF

As long as the government show that thieving is OK, it is hardly surprising that people will claw back the stolen booty by nicking stuff themselves.

gh, you forgot to mention that they also rip off the artists that are signed up to their label. In Canada the artists are suing the record labels (Warner, Sony, EMI and Universal) for $6bn under the same laws that they are trying to impose on us.

It is like Canute trying to stop the tide of change. Most artists recognise that in the digital age that the way to make money is by doing concerts. Some can't because they don't play "music" and can't sing without their voice being processed.

I have recently been hearing about internet2 which is probably connected to the recent outrage about the copyright issue where people will listen to the media saying that copyright violation is breaking econemy and fueling crime to the point that the PUBLIC are crying out for its ( internet2) implimentation .

At present the net goes from the hubs that supply it to the servers .Repair and restoration will be abandoned ( as they the goverment say it has a right to do ) and service will become depleated to the point that all business will be swaped to the new system that will go through goverment hubs being built ...and then to the servers....and then to you .

It will shrink conciderably and i believe that the major google ,yahoo and such have already been queing up for the id service rights as no one will be able to have an alias id and only your official id will be allowed .

the net as we know it now will be finnished ....................very soon if i am informed correctly as the cost of connection becomes cheaper and the band width gets shared it will cease to function .

Also now that the drug has been pushed and people have taken to it ,there is no better time to start charging for its use instead of its connection ......................the pilot i believe will be 1p per email and as forums like this one take bandwith i believe that the providers will be charged which will obviously be passed on by way of membership fees or even posting tolls .
