I've been thinking about Afghanistan and why we are there, and I got the feeling that it is equally about Pakistan as it is Afghanistan. That and stability in the region, because if Pakistan falls to the Taliban, which I feel is a real possibility, they have said that they will attack India.
I think that a fair few of the problems came down to Musharaf. On the one hand he allies himself to the US (presumably because he was paid) but on the other hand, he was criticised at home for being too much in bed with the Americans. He failed to demilitarise Pakistan, leaving safe refuges for the Taliban who flourished. Also releasing them from prison didn't exactly help!
Now we see that there is a real power struggle going on within Pakistan. If Pakistan falls then I think we might all have a problem, not least because the Taliban will have their finger on nukes pointed at India. How long can India remain on the sidelines doing nothing? And what happens if India mobilise against Pakistan?
The Taliban are a US foreign policy decision which is coming home to roost - it just proves that all these clever people learn nothing from history

I imagine that Pakistan's nukes will not be allowed to fall into Taliban hands. I also imagine that the Russians and Americans would be united on this. I am not sure what the Chinese would do. I cannot imagine that they would be too happy with having a rogue state on their door step, even if the nukes have a maximum range of "only" about 2500km.
I am slightly changing my views on Afghanistan, as the real threat to the world does seem to be Pakistan's nuclear weapons. If we pull out, then doesn't it just give a safe haven for regrouping/training and growing drugs to fund these militias?

Once you factor in the homicide bomber as a delivery system the range of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons is the range of a 747 or an Airbus from a Pakistani airport.
