The Miami Herald has an important article today, "French Jews Escape to United States," by Elinor J. Brecher, giving example after example of French Jews who gave up on the Hexagon and moved to southern Florida because of their fears of the growingly bellicose Muslim minority in France. But the real significance of this exodus lies less in the relatively small numbers of Jews making the centuries-old move from the Old World to the New, as it is their preparing the way for others to do the same.

Assuming current trends continue – an increasingly domineering Muslim population, pensioners demanding higher and higher subsidies, the Christian faith ever more marginalized – it is easy to foresee millions of Europeans "escaping" to the United States and perhaps other countries, such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. When added to the already divergent demographic trends (lots of American babies, disappearing Europe ones), this emigration will further propel American predominance. (October 10, 2004)

It's not just Jewish people and it's CERTAINLY not restricted to the other European states, the "White Flight" from Britain is very much higer than any exedus from the rest of Europe.

I've read that now the housing bubble has burst in Spain a lot of English folk who moved out there are trapped in negtive equity and can't find work.
Those with sense will probably sell up if they can and head to Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bermuda, New Zealand or Australia if they have any sense, and take their wealth with them.
I know three people who have left England in the last 6 months, and two Scots I know are heading to Australia in Autumn.

A good friend of mine who was in the USMC and works in I.T has just backed his bags and left.

Interesting you ask because my parents sell real estate here. Texas has actually seen an increase of new home sales because our houses are so cheap due to plentiful land on which to build them.

So we're doing very well.. Tons of British seem to be streaming in as well. They just added a British food section to the supermarket where I shop and I saw a display setup for British cheeses.

Houston belongs to everyone except us, the poor Mexicans in the center or the city, the rich Mexicans in the suburbs and the British come to convert their pounds into dollars or to work in the oil industry. There aren't too many boots and cowboy hats in this part of Texas so the British don't seem to have a problem settling in.

I don't mind the British, but the Mexicans are another story..

Conversely, we couldn't afford a rabbit hutch in the UK.. I hear of people who say they moved to Canada because they hate Bush, but it's only over the internet and who knows if it's true. I don't know of anywhere else we could move where we could maintain our standard of living other than Canada.

I actually know some English folks who settled in Texas about 18 years ago. You'd not know they are English these days apart from some slang words as their accents have changed over time

Now you don't think the folks at BP would miss out on all the fun do you??

Oh and the English immigrants aren't fooling anyone no matter how well they can mimick the Southwestern USA accent. It takes a long time for your skin to acclimate to our climate and there aren't any people other than the British who walk around Texas with no less than an inch of sunscreen on at all times, even at night.

We welcome our English brothers and sisters here in Texas and elsewhere in the USA. I think most Brits like California, but there's little value to be gained there due to extremely high real-estate prices.

Here's a pretty standard 5-bedroom house for 150,000 GBP in the suburbs of Houston (metro pop 5.5 million)
