Default St. George's Day abroad

This is an appeal for ideas. Next week I am making St. George's day the theme of all my lessons. I'll be going to work in an England shirt and with a red rose in my lapel and I plan to use my lessons as a discussion on what England stands for and how it is viewed through the eyes of the rest of the world. What I want to know is what England means to the other nations of the UK i.e. the Scots, Welsh and Irish and also how England is viewed in any other parts of the world where members may live.

Also, there are many symbols of Britain (Union Jack, Britannia, John Bull etc.) but relatively few spring to mind for England. Any ideas for symbols of England rather than Britain? The red rose, white cliffs of dover and so on. What should I be teaching my students about England?

In Australia the view of England tends to be all about sport, as so much of life seems to be about down here. They view England as not too good at most sports and love to beat them at cricket and the two rugbys.

Default History

George>

How about Shakespear as his brithday is on the same day. There is a plethora of things, from Elizabeth I through to Morris dancing, from The Veneral Bede and Anglo-Saxons through to the War of the Roses.
The English pilgrims sailing to new England could also be interesting, especially as in Poland around this time there was Polish involvement with the 30 years war in the form of the Polish-Swedish war of the 1620's.

Another quote of an alleged negative view of England and/or the English from you BonnieDundee.

I seem to recall England beating Australia at Rugby not so long back and winning the Rugby World Cup - not the first World Cup in sport we have won, of course.

Your claim (quote above) does not concord with the view of the Australians I have met and spoken with here in London.

I agree with Brit. I worked in London's Earls Court Exhibition when I was a teen. (barwork etc)

They moan about having to budget but that didn't stop them coming. Some of them even cried when their visa ran out.

I very much doubt if it is.

St. George is a rather popular saint across Europe and his feast day is 23rd. April.

The opening post was written on Sunday. My working week, like most people, runs from Monday to Friday, hence when I wrote that St. George's Day was 'next week'.

Free advice. When you have nothing to say, say nothing.
