I believe in the Monarchy.

But let's cut a deal: I'll go along with the republic idea (which many Australians do want) if the Swiss consensus-plebiscite model of government is adopted at all levels and important powers are restored to the states. Oh look at those pink farm animals moving way up there in the sky...

Now there WOULD be a good idea once the repairing of damage that New Labour have inflicted gets under way.

Because of the way the system works, it is very rare for a referendum to be won in Australia, even if most people support it.

According to the above article:

Quote:
An opinion poll published last year found that 45 per cent were in favour of the Queen being replaced by a home-grown president, with 36 per cent against and 19 per cent undecided.
If this were replicated in a referendum, since one requires a double majority, it would most likely not pass. It is required that the referendum wins support in 4 out of 6 states as well as an overall majority. So, a sparsely populated state can bring down an urban one.

So you can rest easy.

I agree 100% - long live the Monarchy. The republicans lost the last referendum in Australia on this subject despite the media liberals all claiming that victory for the anti-Monarchists was assured.

I think what we need is both the Monarchy and the Swiss referendum system.

The republicans failed to win in one state - let alone four - in the last referendum on this subject in Australia.

I wish the pro-Monarchy movement in Australia every success.

Opinion polls before the last referendum on this subject in Australia put support for republicanism ahead of the Monarchists just before that referendum. As we know, the republicans (thank goodness) lost that referendum when it was actually held.

I don't know whether it's a case of monarchy or republic, but it just seems daft having a Head of State who lives 10,000 miles away.
