We were treated to a little BBC dockie recently where I could have sworn they were trying to make excuses for it. Why doesn't this surprise any of us?

What has basically happened is that the international banks have pulled the plug on Mugabe since he stopped cooperating with them. Before that he was a model dictator to them. You can check yourself if you don't believe it, just like Saddam was a model dictator to them before he went independent. Remember Mugabe was educated in London.

Mugabe was educated in Africa. He studied for a commercial degree by correspondence through a British institution. He is a thoroughgoing left wing African nationalist. He is not a universalist. This is what marks him out among African supporters as a man of the people in the sense that he fought to bring Marxism to Zimbabwe in the form of national socialism. This is where lefties have missed the mark in seeing him as one of their own who fights the terrible fascist whites and brings freedom and prosperity to the workers. He isn't anything of the sort. He is a nationalist and on top of that he is also a tribalist. he is pugnacious and doesn't give a flying fandango for the European version of the Marxist doctrine. He is far more at home, as was Mandela, with communist China, another highly tribalist, nationalist communist entity. And there the European lefties are hating nazis when they have so many clones elsewhere among mistaken political brothers.

What on earth is a 'nationalist communist entity' considering all of that Marxism stuff was towards world Socialism? And besides I wasn't denying he was a dictator and they come in various styles but they all dictate. Now Mugabe and the British were getting on fine, you see lots of people has fought and a lot died in a war of independence from Ian Smith only to find that they had fought for another leader tied to the British.

How it works is they cover up his crimes rather like a franchise arrangement where you sign up to it and get all the professional marketing thrown in with the deal. However there is always a blackmail component to it and that is precisely the crimes that are covered up. Now when the terms of the agreement are broken the governing people call it in. They remove their money just like they did in Argentina and the country's economic system crashes because it is not backed by any hard currency. That is the stuff that is removed. When this happens you get inflation.

A communist entity that is ideologically nationalist. Robert Mugabe is a Marxist by uniform and a nationalist by blood. His mentor was not an Englishman but an Irish Jesuit priest who fed him stirring visions of revolution and anti-British propaganda. Like all good dictators, Mugabe took what he liked about everything he learned and applied it to the art of smearing butter thickly on both sides of his own bread. Whether they get their foreign aid and investment from one kind of patron or another is not of much significance to them. As one source of donation dries up so does another open up. Some in Africa have resorted to blood diamonds as a way round this. As long as people keep believing that a fight against "oppression" is automatically fuelled by righteous liberty loving individuals who just want to share a country's wealth they will continue to back the wrong horses and bankrupt themselves.

Sanctions don't work and neither does foreign aid. When are they going to realise this? (Rhetorical question. They don't care and smoke and mirrors and window dressing can screen their inaction and address what might pass for their conscience, if they had such a thing.)
