The US government is concerned that insurgents in Iraq are trying to sway US voters, and the Pentagon is planning to set up an information unit to accentuate positive news from Iraq.

Iran has limited the speed of internet connections in its drive to stifle domestic political dissent and combat the influence of western culture
.

Oh like they don't do that already.

Governments fear the internet, because they can't control it.

Oh but they will try.

Well as we have heard, the EU are trying to ban content on video sharing sites, how long can it be until freedom of the press is just a distant memory?

Freedom of the press is actually a bit of a sick joke.

Only now the internet has arrived, are we seeing true freedom. Anyone can report and the user can choose what to read and believe.

Before that the press was actually as controlled as it could be, with a few people owning all the media really.

The internet is scaring governments, because the people no longer get spoon fed the info they want them to have! All the overt fascist/close regimes are blocking it, now the covert ones are trying to do the same.

They will argue that it is bad because the enemy use it. Well sorry, ANYONE can use it and if your argument doesn't hold up, then perhaps your argument is wrong.

I think we have seen a similar attitude a little closer to home.

Well the internet is a fantastic revolution and promotes the idealogy of free speech. However, I agree with the previous posts. Governments and parties are all scared of internet users and computer friendly activists because it has only been in the past few years since people have become internet savvy and are starting to post their opinions, beliefs and views on websites and also challenge the opions of others.

If Blair, Cameron, Campbell or any other party leader really looked at all the supporting or opposing political views, then they would run home scared.
