Default Land of the free again?

Quote:
The now-declassified summary of the National Intelligence Estimate on "Trends on Global Terrorism" [includes this passage:] "Anti-U.S. and anti-globalization sentiment is on the rise and fueling other radical ideologies. This could prompt some leftist, nationalist, or separatist groups to adopt terrorist methods to attack US interests.
The radicalization process is occurring more quickly, more widely, and more anonymously in the Internet age, raising the likelihood of surprise attacks by unknown groups whose members and supporters may be difficult to pinpoint."
That this claim about "leftist" terrorist groups made it into the NIE summary is particularly significant in light of the torture and detention bill that is likely soon to be enacted into law. That bill defines "enemy combatant" very broadly (and the definition may be even broader by the time it is enacted) and could easily encompass domestic groups perceived by the administration to be supporting a "terrorist agenda."
The now-declassified summary of the National Intelligence Estimate (PDF) on "Trends in Global Terrorism" focuses almost exclusively on Islamic extremists. But inserted at the very end is this one overlooked, though seemingly quite important, passage that identifies other terrorist threats:

Quote:
This could prompt some leftist, nationalist, or separatist groups to adopt terrorist methods to attack US interests. The radicalization process is occurring more quickly, more widely, and more anonymously in the Internet age, raising the likelihood of surprise attacks by unknown groups whose members and supporters may be difficult to pinpoint." It continues: "We judge that groups of all stripes will increasingly use the Internet to communicate, propagandize, recruit, train and obtain logistical and financial support."
Anyone is considered a potential terrorist now. Whether that be leftist, nationalist or seperatist. How very convienient at a time one a one world government is being pushed for.

UKIP will be considered a terrorist organisation if this sort of thing comes to Britain.

Would you bet against that?

It could be used against any group, and there is no doubt that neo-cons will attempt to use it against their critics.

They see issues in terms of black and white, good and bad; there is no middle ground, there are no grey areas. So anyone who opposes neo-con policy is branded as an enemy.

Who's 'we'?

I can see Brown and Cameron and possibly even US Presidential hopefuls vying to do a Nixon and bring the boys back home.

Once Blair leaves the stage the Yank Neocons lose their best friend.

Here's what life's like for soldiers in Afganistan while sabre-rattling neocons sip cocktails safe in Washington

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/...cle1777869.ece

Quote:
A less glorious account of a similar engagement was given by a British soldier, however, who reported on an operation to rescue Afghan troops and French special forces who had been ambushed by Taliban. "I could not believe we were going to charge off this helicopter into a wall of lead," he wrote. "Not everyone wanted to get off. One guy actually defecated. He sat rigid with fear inside the cargo hold until we pulled him up and pointed him towards the door.

"We had to manoeuvre across open ground for 200 metres. The scene was like a human abattoir. We fought off the Taliban, but were too late to save the French guys. All of us were shaking when we were flown back to base. One of the Afghan survivors said the French had been tied up, then gutted alive by the Taliban. It was one of the most shocking things I had ever heard."

But one soldier claimed that "scare tactics" were being used against anyone revealing such details, complaining: "It is not fair. The commanding officer said that he would mallet anyone he found was speaking about this."
