Default Poland and Israel

Quote:
This is not the first time in my life that I have attended such a ceremony, but this is the first time that I have done so as the President of the Republic of Poland. My presence here, together with the Speakers of the Sejm and the Senate, and with Madam Minister of Foreign Affairs, in not accidental. Our presence here is evidence of the importance that we attach to Polish-Israeli relations.

So the notoriously anti-semitic Poles join the BNP as born-again Zionists.

Who next? The Ku Klux Klan?

I think you're being a tad unfair Mike. There were indeed many anti-Semitic Poles (Jews were banned from Warsaw University before the Nazi invasion), but the point of this article is about 'the Righteous Among Nations'.

There were many thousands of people under Nazi occupation who helped Jewish people by concealing them, dressing them as priests and monks in Italy, ostensibly employing them as slave labourers in order to keep them alive, changing their documentation so that they appeared as Poles, Belarussians, Germans etc and even in dire cases dieing on their behalf. It is this group of people who were being honoured.

Some of the worst anti-Semitism was indeed in the Slavic countries. It doesn't make all Slavs anti-Semitic.

(For the purposes of this post I use anti-Semitic to mean anti people who are Jewish or of Jewish origin.)

Default The Great King

Quote:
Kazimierz is the only Polish king who both received and has kept the title of the Great in Polish history (Boleslaw I Chrobry was once also called the Great, but not today), and the title is well deserved. When he received the crown, his hold on it was in danger, as even his neighbours did not recognise his title and instead called him "king of Kraków". The economy was ruined, and the country was depopulated and exhausted by war. Upon his death, he left a country doubled in size (mostly through the addition of land in today's Ukraine, then the Duchy of Halicz), grew prosperous, wealthy and had great prospects for the future. Although he is depicted as a peaceful king in children's books, he in fact waged many victorious wars and was readying for others just before he died.
Quote:
Relationship with Polish Jews
King Kazimierz was favorably disposed toward Jews. On October 9, 1334, he confirmed the privileges granted to Jewish Poles in 1264 by Boleslaus V. Under penalty of death, he prohibited the kidnapping of Jewish children for the purpose of enforced Christian baptism. He inflicted heavy punishment for the desecration of Jewish cemeteries.

Although Jews had lived in Poland since before the reign of King Kazimierz, he allowed them to settle in Poland in great numbers and protected them as people of the king.

Quote:
For almost seven hundred years, Krakow was home to a large Jewish community. This was all but extinguished during the II World War, yet the echoes of this world can still be felt across the city. Kazimierz now has a Jewish cultural centre, several Jewish style restaurants with appropriate cooking and klezmer music every evening. Every year in June there is a festival of Jewish culture when music fills the streets, drawing a host of young Polish and international fans.

Default How many Polish saints?

How many Polish saints? Well about four thousand nine hundred and fifty four at a rough guess!

Quote:
Three million Poles and three million Polish Jews perished as a result of the German occupation. Poland was the only country in occupied Europe where giving any kind of help to the Jews resulted in summary execution of the helper and his or her family. Under such circumstances it would require a person of a special kind of courage and love of humanity to offer help to a Jew. How many saints would one find in any community? And yet there were some Polish people who did help. It has always been difficult to establish the exact number of helpers. Some idea of the number can be gleaned from the Yad Vashem list of the 'Righteous among the Nations' (l). The list, as of 1st January 1997, gives the names of 14,706 persons from 34 nationalities who helped the Jews. 4,954 of them are Polish helpers. Among them are listed 11 catholic clergymen and 18 nuns. Only three organisations are honoured by Yad Vashem, one being, the Polish organisation 'Żegota'. It is likely that as research into the role of the Polish people in the Holocaust continues, the list of Polish names will grow.

Talking to yourself again Adrian? Bad sign.

When the Nazis invaded Poland they didn't need to herd the Jews into ghettos.

The Poles had already done it for them.
