The EU is plotting to impose a travel ban on people going to Belarus (White Russia). But does the EU actually have the power to stop EU so-called 'citizens' going there or coming here (to the UK). It is appalling that the EU is able to prevent Britons from travelling to another sovereign jurisdiction outside the EU. But does the EU actually have this power - it seems it has given itself the power (as it has done on so many other issues) and no national government (of an EU member state) is challenging the EU over these illegal power-grabs.
I take the view that the internal affairs of Belarus are not the business of the EU. One day the EU is going to stick its nose INTO phpbb_some country/region of the world and get a hard punch in the face  . Report on ITV 1 Teletext (analogue) at 6.17 pm on 24.3.2006 “EU leaders have decided to punish Belarus (White Russia) President Alexander Lukashenko after a ballot seen as rigged – including a travel ban. The EU decision puts Mr. Lukashenko on the same EU blacklist as Mugabe (Zimbabwe) and Burma’s military leaders. Belarus authorities have been urged not to take any further action after a crackdown n Minsk (the capital). Report on BBC 1 Ceefax (analogue page 114) 24.3.2006 at 6.22 pm: The USA joined EU leaders in condemning an overnight crackdown against the opposition in Minsk. The opposition says that 500 people were detained after riot police broke up a 5-day long protest against the poll last weekend. Belarus say that last Sunday’s vote was democratic. |

I really don't like what I've read about the Prez of Belarus, and I hope he gets kicked out soon. But it is no business of the EU to tell us where we can and can't travel, and if they try to do so it'll only boost the Belarus tourist trade, as thousands who never previously considered the possibility start to ponder the benefits of cheap holidays there.

How much are flights to Belarus then?
Actually, I'm going to Estonia in May, so perhaps I'll make a quick visit there too.
