f a wife is with her husband who is ill, she has to take some kind of responsibility for him EVEN if that responsibility is only her having a chat with the check in staff.
No, you don't go round telling people that your loved one has a mental illness 'just in case.' If he was agitated and acting as though he was getting ill on a high, when they checked in, it may have been appropriate. What we know is that she did tell them when he did get ill, with no doubt. It is hard to judge.

You do when you are going INTO phpbb_a situation where people are nervous and there are loads of people ready to pop a cap INTO phpbb_his dome!

Indeed I would say she was either stupid or negligent (If she didn't tell them!). If she was stupid, then you have to give her a bit of slack as she can't help that.

She was telling all and sundry when he did a runner, so I would be surprised if she didn't discreetly tell the check in people about it.

You are being wise after the event, IMO and very unkind.

1. A high percentage of married people who develop Bipolar, end up being divorced by their spouse. She was special, she stayed with him.

2. Being agitated or angry does not mean one is mentally ill. A person with Bipolar can be those things because of a valid reason, same as everyone else.

3. It is unlikely that his agitation was pronounced enough to warrant the wife informing the check-in staff. If it was pronounced enough, they would have noticed and stopped him, just as they notice someone who is drunk and acting erratically.

4. No wife is going to be thinking 'I'd better tell them my husband has Bipolar because he might tell them he has a bomb' Bipolar sufferers are not known to claim to have bombs with them. It is not on the list of symptoms.

5. Air Marshalls are not going to shoot someone just because they are very agitated or angry, that is normal at airports. A threat to detonate a bomb however ..........

No one could have predicted that this man would tell the airport staff he had a bomb. Bipolar is not an indicator of that.

If the late Sir Spike Milligan was at the airport and was agitated, and you were accompanying him, would you think he was about to threaten people by telling 'em he had a bomb? Ernest Hemingway? Virginia Woolfe? The actress who played Princess Leia in Star Wars?

I'd tell the check in staff that it was OK, please be aware he may act a little strangely, but he is no threat and I am looking after him.

And what would you expect the staff to do? If you've told them he has Bipolar, BTW, without his permission, you have broken the law.

BTW, a terrorist plans a cunning plan, just like Baldrick. He gets an accomplice to tell the check-in staff that he has mental problems, but it is okay, he is no threat.

Later, he says he has a bomb and reaches INTO phpbb_his bag, which has a very cunning secret compartment.

The Armed Marshalls smile because they 'know' he is no threat, because the nice guy told the check-in staff.

BOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!

Which law would that be?

You cannot disclose medical history to people without permission. It is the same law that GPs have to follow when you fill in a form to an insurance company, for example, allowing the GP to give them medical details.
