Taxas has an independence movement too, as does Hawai'i (which is actually being illegally occupied by the USA) and I believe there are other groups too.
The USA is, despite its desperate desire not to be, an empire. It even displays the dynamics of an empire as it rampages across the world. As with all empires, it will one day collapse. It has been doing tremendously well so far though (empire-wise) and may last a fair bit longer. Foolishly, the USA helped to bring about the end of the British Empire, which was detremental to itself. It is to be hoped that its collapse is not too detrimental to the UK, which it could easily be. (And of course, not too detrimental to its own people.) |

Maybe the US is an empire. I've never taken the time to really consider it, but you have and I'll take your word for it. But I do think you may be reading a little too much INTO phpbb_this one. There isn't a state in the union that doesn't have a group that talks about secession. There are still people in the southern states who say they live in the CSA (occupied). There are Alaskan secessionists, blue state secessionists, red state secessionists. Canada has provinces with groups that talk about leaving Canada. We all know about Quebec, but the Maritimes have their groups, the western provinces have their groups, and there is a US/Canadian group that talks about the formation of the Republic of Cascadia out of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Different countries, same principle (no, not the empire rampaging over the world principle. I don't think many people would categorize Canada as an evil empire  ). People get angry with governments and talk about starting their own countries. No doubt the United States is in decline, but I think the kind of collapse you are predicting is unlikely. It's like Hawai'i. The Hawaiian monarchy was illegally toppled in the 19th century, but there are 300,000 native Hawaiians compared to several million whites, blacks, Asians, and Hispanics who couldn't possibly be moved. To move them might be just, but it would be no more practical than moving all the Jews from the Middle East.
