Default Vermont independance!

http://www.vermontrepublic.org/index.html

Quote:
The Second Vermont Republic is a peaceful, democratic, grassroots solidarity movement committed to the return of Vermont to its rightful status as an independent republic as was the case in 1791 and to support Vermont's future development as a separate, sustainable nation-state. Members of the Second Vermont Republic subscribe to the following principles:

Political Independence. Our primary objective is to extricate Vermont peacefully from the United States as soon as possible.

Direct Democracy. Vermont's strong democratic tradition is grounded in its town meetings which have served as the state's political mainstay for over two centuries. We favor devolution of power from the federal and state governments back to local communities and the extension of participatory democracy to the workplace and the farm..
Sustainability. We celebrate and support Vermont's small, clean, green, sustainable, socially responsible towns, farms, businesses, schools, and churches. We encourage family owned farms and businesses to produce innovative, premium-quality, high-value added, healthy products. We also believe that energy independence is an essential goal towards which to strive.

Economic Solidarity. We encourage Vermonters to buy locally produced products from small local merchants rather than from giant, out-of-state mega stores. We support trade with nearby states and provinces.

Quality Education. We would return to local Vermont communities the control and financing of small local schools.
Wellness. We encourage small locally controlled health care systems similar to those found in Switzerland in which, unlike the United States, patients, physicians, clinics, hospitals, and insurance providers are all in community with one another.

Nonviolence. Consistent with Vermont's long history of nonviolence, we do not condone state-sponsored violence inflicted either by military or law enforcement officials. However, we do support a voluntary citizens' militia to restore order in the event of political unrest or natural disasters. We are unconditionally opposed to any form of military conscription.

Foreign Policy. We also favor negotiations with Maine, New Hampshire and the four Atlantic provinces of Canada possibly to create a New Atlantic Confederacy - a nation about the size of Denmark. We would not rule out similar negotiations with Quebec, as well as membership in the U.N.
Membership. Second Vermont Republic membership is open to anyone who subscribes to these principles, regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation

Taxas has an independence movement too, as does Hawai'i (which is actually being illegally occupied by the USA) and I believe there are other groups too.
The USA is, despite its desperate desire not to be, an empire. It even displays the dynamics of an empire as it rampages across the world. As with all empires, it will one day collapse. It has been doing tremendously well so far though (empire-wise) and may last a fair bit longer.
Foolishly, the USA helped to bring about the end of the British Empire, which was detremental to itself. It is to be hoped that its collapse is not too detrimental to the UK, which it could easily be. (And of course, not too detrimental to its own people.)

Maybe the US is an empire. I've never taken the time to really consider it, but you have and I'll take your word for it. But I do think you may be reading a little too much INTO phpbb_this one. There isn't a state in the union that doesn't have a group that talks about secession. There are still people in the southern states who say they live in the CSA (occupied). There are Alaskan secessionists, blue state secessionists, red state secessionists. Canada has provinces with groups that talk about leaving Canada. We all know about Quebec, but the Maritimes have their groups, the western provinces have their groups, and there is a US/Canadian group that talks about the formation of the Republic of Cascadia out of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Different countries, same principle (no, not the empire rampaging over the world principle. I don't think many people would categorize Canada as an evil empire  ). People get angry with governments and talk about starting their own countries. No doubt the United States is in decline, but I think the kind of collapse you are predicting is unlikely. It's like Hawai'i. The Hawaiian monarchy was illegally toppled in the 19th century, but there are 300,000 native Hawaiians compared to several million whites, blacks, Asians, and Hispanics who couldn't possibly be moved. To move them might be just, but it would be no more practical than moving all the Jews from the Middle East.

That's mighty kind of you
