Default 'Food miles' that leave a bad taste

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/ma...2/ixhmain.html

Quote:
Before reaching supermarket shelves, much of our fruit and vegetables has travelled thousands of miles, resulting in a significant reduction of vital nutrients. Spinach stored at room temperature loses between 50 and 90 per cent of its vitamin C within 24 hours of being picked. Folic acid, present in many green leafy vegetables, is prone to destruction with time and exposure to light.
Quote:
Research published this year by the University of Essex and City University revealed that buying locally produced food would save the UK £2.1 billion in environmental and congestion costs. The report's authors, Professor Jules Pretty and Professor Tim Lang, have also called for supermarkets to put food miles on product labels, so customers can make informed choices.
You mean encourage local farming and food production? But that's what those swivel eyed loons at UKIP have been saying for years. It can't be true.

News just in: for a couple of million £, I'll stick the word "University" after my name and produce a report which proves that the Irish Sea is made of water.

(P.S. Anyone want to ghost-write the report for me? I can't be bothered because there's a good CSI on tonight which I have to watch to further hone my deduction skills. I'll give you a tenner)

But as Mariann Fischer Boel, the European Union's farm commissioner, pointed out recently, this was probably due to a failure in communications by politicians, including the EU Commission, rather than misunderstandings by the British media. The British media has, by and large, fallen in with the government's anti-EU message that we are paying through the nose to continue supporting a tiny percentage of the workforce - farmers and growers
The governments anti-EU message.

Quote:
It confirms that our so-called efficient food supply system is grossly wasteful. If the government doesn't take action to tackle this, all its proposals on climate change will be so much nonsense," he said.
Just like anything this government or the EU come out with.
