Default US opposes Brown anti-poverty plan

Daily Mail
Quote:
Chancellor Gordon Brown is facing critical opposition from the United States to his plans for tackling poverty in Africa and the rest of the developing world.

Mr Brown has been welcoming finance ministers and central bank governors from the G7 group of major industrialised nations to London for a conference at which he is hoping to push his agenda for tackling global poverty.

However his hopes of achieving a breakthrough received a setback when it emerged that US under-secretary for international affairs at the Treasury, John Taylor, briefed journalists that the US opposes a British debt relief scheme and a new financing facility.

A key element in Mr Brown's blueprint for helping the developing world is the establishment of an International Finance Facility (IFF), to raise an additional 50 billion dollars a year for development.
It would use donor countries' long-term funding commitments as collateral against which to borrow money in the international capital markets, then use that money to double development aid now.

But en route to the London conference, Mr Taylor - substituting at the conference for the ill US Treasury Secretary John Snow - told journalists: "Not only does the IFF not work for the US, we don't need the IFF."

UKIP MAN is just starting out
Default

This was an item for discusion on the radio the other day and a few point raise were very interesting.

How deep are tony bliar or gordon browns pockets?

is he going to sell his house to help them?

They are posturing and using tax payers money to improve their profile and standing in the world, when people in this country who have paid INTO phpbb_the tax system are suffering through no fault of their own.

I know the British public want to help as proved with the collection for the tsunami appeal, but you can only help so much and if they cant do for themselves you will always be helping.

And if they have no more debt are you going to lend more money and be in the same situation again in ten years time
