Default Unemployment holds steady at 8.9% in European Union

BRUSSELS (AP) — Unemployment in the 25-member European Union held steady at 8.9% in December compared with the month-earlier period, but the annual rate was 0.2 percentage points lower than a year ago, according to the EU's statistics office, Eurostat.
The highest unemployment rates were recorded in Poland with 18.3%, Slovakia with 16.9%, Spain with 10.4% and Germany with 10%.

The lowest rates were in Ireland with 4.3%, Luxembourg with 4.4% and Austria with 4.5%.

The 12 countries using the euro currency also had an average unemployment rate of 8.9%, up 0.1 percentage point from November.

December's unemployment rate was 5.4% in the United States and 4.4% in Japan.

That pretty much explains why all the pizza boys are now Polish. You can't blame them when unemployment is that bad over there! I though Poland was supposed to be a tiger economy that would propell the EU, not drag it back!

So much for the Lisbon agenda!
