Default French appeal for wine crisis distillation

http://www.beveragedaily.com/news/ne...nch-appeal-for
Quote:
26/01/2005 - Over the last two years Spain, France and Italy’s wine production has increased by over 8 million hectolitres each. In the face of a global glut, the French wine confederation is calling on the EU to fund a crisis distillation of 10 million hectolitres, writes Kim Hunter Gordon. .
Is it April 1st today? Or are France taking the wine again?

You couldn't make this up. The scary thing is they will get it!

Quote:
“It is the first time in the history that the gravity of the crisis has led to AOC wines calling upon distillation.” said Denis Verdier, president of the CCVF. In addition to distillation, Verdier also asks for financial assistance for pulling up vines, including 10,000 hectares in the Bordeaux region.

While vine growing accounts for 7 per cent of the European agricultural production, Brussels devotes only 3 per cent of its agricultural budget to the sector.
They souldn't be getting anything. If you can't make money from wine, what can you make it from.

The French government announced over euro70 million (US$91.2 million) in aid Monday for France's struggling wine industry, hit by falling consumption at home and increased competition on export markets.

The government will also allow the destruction of vines in overproducing regions and apply for EU permission to distill millions of surplus bottles INTO phpbb_alcohol, Agriculture Minister Dominique Bussereau said.
We subsidise this shower. Mad world!
