Just remember - what happens in America often finds its way across the pond ...
PHILADELPHIA - A 10-year-old girl was placed in handcuffs and taken to a police station because she took a pair of scissors to her elementary school. School district officials said the fourth-grade student did not threaten anyone with the 8-inch shears, but violated a rule that considers scissors to be potential weapons. Administrators said they were following state law when they called police Thursday, and police said they were following department rules when they handcuffed Porsche Brown and took her away in a patrol wagon. "My daughter cried and cried," said her mother, Rose Jackson. "She had no idea what she did was wrong. I think that was way too harsh." Police officers decided the girl hadn't committed a crime and let her go. However, school officials suspended her for five days. Administrators will decide at a hearing whether she may return to class, or be expelled to a special disciplinary school. Administrators say the steps are needed to regain control over a notoriously unruly school system, but some parents have complained that discipline has been overly harsh and that school officials have been too quick to call police about minor problems. Suspension? Expelled? She is only ten years old!!! |

The key word is "Administrator" This is where I see similarities with the U.K. - teachers should run schools - not administrators who haven't a clue about children or teaching. |

Home Secretary David Blunkett and Education Secretary Charles Clarke are considering moves to combat the proliferation of knives.
They include raising the age at which teenagers can buy a knife to 18 and introducing searches in schools. The age limit would bring knives INTO phpbb_line with fireworks and alcohol. Mr Blunkett said there was a "strong argument" for having to be 18 to buy a knife. The education secretary is looking at giving head teachers new powers to search pupils, rather than waiting for police to do so. He is also considering setting up agreements between heads and police to let them request unannounced police searches in schools to detect and deter knives. ~~~~~~~~ It wasn't so long ago that a schoolboy without a penknife was a rarity. How is it that things have changed so much? What is the cause of the violence today? What we read about today - being almost common place - would have made national headlines a few years ago. This dramatic increase in the use of violence - epecially among the young has to have a common cause, it being so widespread. What is that cause and what/who is to blame? I now read that a 12yo boy raped his schoolteacher. At 12yo !!! Sure we have lost the plot somewhere ... P.S Notice how the word "proliferation" is being used so much these days? We don't have increases - we have proliferations. We no longer have fear - we have terror. We no longer have laws - we have directives. Our common language is changing ... this is the language in which we think ... Orwell understood the consequence of the manipulation of language ... I'm okay - I think in graphics ![]() |
