Italy on Monday night became the latest eurozone country to face questions about its official budget data, amid suspicions it might have massaged figures to avoid breaking the European Union's fiscal rules.
Finance ministers, meeting in Brussels, were presented with a European Commission report that said a number of questions about Italy's debt and deficit figures remained unanswered.
The report comes the week after the Commission started legal action against Greece for publishing false deficit figures over a six-year period.
EU officials stressed there was no suggestion Italy had misreported its figures on anything like the same scale as Greece, but one said: "We haven't got to the bottom of it yet but it does look fishy."
