Default EU army takes over in Bosnia where hatreds still simmer

http://news.independent.co.uk/europe...p?story=588819

Quote:
Arkan was a notorious Serb warlord. Franjo Tudjman led neighbouring Croatia to independence in 1991. Both are dead now. But enmity lives on.

This is the atmosphere INTO phpbb_which European troops will march today. For, more than a decade after Europe failed to avert bloody civil war in the Balkans, the EU today takes over peace-keeping duties in Bosnia in a crucial test for the union's defence ambitions.

Around 7,000 troops will assume Nato's military role, serving under a British general commanding an EU military mission, EU-For, expected to stay for around three years.

But, but, but I thought Richard Corbett exploded the myth and said there was no EU Army!

How ever will I trust a word he says again.

And as for the argument that the EU somehow has prevented Europe from having endless war.

Quote:
Aware that the EU's failure to intervene in the 1990s has not been forgotten, General Sir John Reith, the EU's operation commander, promised: "The population will see no difference other than the change of badges. It will be entirely seamless. Anybody who was even thinking about testing our mettle would see that it is not worth their while."
The EU couldn't organise a bunfight in a bakery, nevermind prevent any wars.

Good on them.... this is one area where I'm proud to be a citizen of Europe!
- I hate the fact that our defence policy is effectively run by the US.... Why should NATO ensure peace in bosnia when it's in our backyard?

No - we should follow the right policy for us and the world at large.

I'm going to have to defend the French and Germans here though. For all the **** that the media has thrown at them for resisting GWs rush to war the french are doing a vital role in Africa and the Germans are the backbone in Afganistan.....
