UKIP attack the new commission

Good on both of them, someone needs to speak up for the oridnary man, and it looks like UKIP members are the only ones brave enough to do it.

Mandelson is the biggest slimeball ever to hold office in this country, and now he is our "representation" in the corrupt EU.

It must be hard for the poor little loves in the EU parliment to hear a few home truths, as they are used to being unopposed.

Well done Farage and Kilroy-Silk!

French President Jacques Chirac subsequently granted M Barrot a presidential amnesty, making it illegal under French law to even mention the conviction. However, Mr Farage felt it was proper that MEPs were informed of the past of the Vice President designate, and used his speech in the Strasbourg chamber to do so.

Many French MEPs were not aware of the conviction, as in compliance with French law it was totally censored from the French media.

The President of the European Parliament, Spaniard Josep Borrell, warned Mr Farage that he should withdraw his remarks, as he may face ‘legal consequences’. Mr Farage, who in theory enjoys Parliamentary immunity while speaking in the chamber, refused to do so, and was, amazingly, condemned by other MEPs for telling the truth.

Mr Farage said, “Yesterday, the Court of Auditors refused to sign off the EU’s accounts for the 10th year in a row, because 93.5% of the EU’s expenditure was, in their words, ‘unsafe or riddled with errors’.

“Today, the European Parliament is prepared to overlook the conviction of a senior member of the Commission for embezzling government funds, and is prepared instead to threaten with arrest the person who reveals it.

“What clearer indication can there possibly be of the corruption and hypocrisy which pervades the entire European project from the lowest to the highest levels?”

Excellent. If anyone says UKIP MEP's are a waste of time, then this proves that to be wrong. UKIP are the only party pointing out the farce that is the EU.

The EU are full of incompetent,disgraced,political failures and has-beens Commisioners who brought their own brand of corruption with them.That why I voted for UKIP.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Nigel Farage, a British eurosceptic MEP, caused a furore in the European Parliament on Thursday (18 November) by launching a strong attack on the French Commissioner, Jacques Barrot.

Mr Farage, who belongs to the UK Independence Party, said that Mr Barrot should not be allowed to be a commissioner alleging he received an eight month suspended sentence in 2000 for a funding scandal involving his political party.

His comments about Mr Barrot caused immediate uproar among MEPs - drowning out remaining speakers' attempts to speak.

He also spoke out against the Estonian and Hungarian commissioners, Siim Kallas and Laszlo Kovacs, referring to their communist pasts; against the UK Commissioner Peter Mandelson and referred to allegations that Neelie Kroes, the Dutch Commissioner, had lied to the European Parliament.

Defence
Leaders of the other political groups were quick to defend Mr Barrot. Hans-Gert Pöttering, head of the centre-right EPP group, strongly praised the French Commissioner.

Francis Wurtz, who as leader of the United left comes from the other end of the political spectrum to Mr Barrot, also defended his "political adversary".

Referring to British football hooligans, liberal leader Graham Watson said "I fear we now have their representation here in parliament".

President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell asked whether Mr Farage wanted his comments struck from the minutes of the parliament so that he would not face "legal consequences".

But Mr Farage, who thought he had full parliamentary immunity, refused to retract his statements saying they were based on "substantial research".

It was unclear whether he did have immunity as he was speaking in Strasbourg on French soil - under French law no reference is allowed to be made to the case in public after Mr Barrot came under a presidential amnesty.

Mr Farage's party later released a statement saying "many French MEPs were not aware of the conviction, as in compliance with French law it was totally censored from the French media".

The brief but fiery exchange came just before a vote by MEPs on the new Commission - which eventually saw it approved with 66% of the votes cast.
