I can't tell you what it was like 30 years ago. I don't know if it has changed although I'm sure communism supressed it.
What I can say is that over the last 15 years I've come into contact with vast numbers of people from all over the world through my time in catering and, broadly, it is possible to assign different mentalities to different nationalities, obviously this cannot apply 100%. Poles, by and large, are hardworking, honest and respectful. Huge numbers of them came to Britain in the 30's and 40's and yet within a generation they were so integrated as to be indistuingishable. The same will happen with those who have arrived in the last few years. Far, far more problems will arise from Romanian immigrants and God help us if Albania is ever allowed in.

Which is what we need in Britain. There are stereotypes of course. The Poles are seen )at present) as hardworking, but there is also the stereotype of them portrayed as stupid. |
