Here's a crazy snippet of my day today, it was so striking I had to comment:
Went to my dentist. Had my teeth checked out by an Indian dentist and his Nigerian assistant. Had my car washed (not the best day to have it done but the deal was on offer) by a Slovakian, a Pole and two Lithuanians. Picked up a prescription for a relative of mine from a Pakistani run pharmacy. As I was near the train station dropped in to buy a ticket and served by a West Indian gentleman. Bought something to eat from a family-run Chinese store. Served on the till in a mini-mart by a Eastern European girl. Obviously this is a selected part of my day, but I thought about it, I've had probably more dealings with migrants than English people. I am not passing any sort of social comment, just that it's quite striking how diverse parts of our country and society are now. All were helpful and polite and with the exception of the guys who washed my car spoke and understood English fine. I come from an average, moderately-sized city in England. Next time you're out and about, take note and see if you have had a similar experience! |

And what's the betting you didn't bump into any Brazilian supermodels?
By rights we should be chock full of them by now. But no, they're too good looking so our government doesn't let them in.
