Default BBC - White working class 'voiceless'

BBC NEWS | Programmes | Newsnight | White working class 'voiceless'

White working class 'voiceless'

Many white working class people believe immigration threatens jobs

Your views: white Britons

A majority of white working class Britons feel nobody speaks for people like them, a BBC survey has suggested.
Some 58% said they felt unrepresented compared to 46% of white middle class respondents to a Newsnight poll.
White working classes were also negative about the past decade with 62% saying life had generally become worse in the UK.
In response to BBC Two's White Season, a special Newsnight on 6 March will feature full poll results and debate.
Crime worse
In most areas covered by the survey the white working classes are more pessimistic about the future and more negative about the last decade in Britain than white middle class people.

Of the white working class people questioned 71% believe crime has got worse over the last decade, compared with 66% of middle class white people.
On housing, 80% of the white working classes say that people like them can no longer afford to buy homes in the area they live. A smaller majority - 68% - of middle class people believed they had been priced out of the local housing market.
Overall 62% of the white working classes believe that life in Britain has generally got worse over the last decade compared with 51% of middle class white people.
Jobs risked
When asked whether they thought immigration into Britain, on the whole, was a good or bad thing for the country the survey suggests that opinion was divided between people from different social groups.
Some 52% of the white working class people questioned thought immigration was a bad thing (42% thought it was a good thing), while just 33% of white middle class people thought it bad (62% thought it a good thing).
When asked whether they thought new immigrants had put their jobs at risk the survey suggests that more than twice as many white working class people (27%) compared with middle class (13%) people thought it had. Populus interviewed a random sample of 1,012 white British adults aged 18+ by telephone between 29th February and 2nd March 2008.

Nice that's it's being high-lighted but do the Beeb actually care or just doing it to look good and as a ploy to increase viewing figures?

I believe it to be a cynical attempt by the BBC to con the British Public into believing they really do care. It is generally believed that there will be a hung Parliament after the next election. A hung Parliament that could well see MP's from the 'fringe' Parties like the UKIP and BNP. If this is the case, the BBC could be in for a rough time from Parliament, with the possiblity that they (BBC) could lose the license fee, forcing them to compete with the Independent channels for advertising.

If you look at the figures in the survey you'll see the middle classes aren't far behind so don't know why the BBC is calling this a working class issue when it's clear both groups are very concerned about immigration and the destruction of this country.

Exactly. It's hardly surprising that the poor mugs who have to compete with the mass influx of unskilled labour are just ahead in the ****** off stakes. Especially when their cost of living is so high and they are raped over and over again for tax.

They had a debate about this on the Wright Stuff on Friday morning (C5). Well, I call it a debate, it was more of a Wright bias rant.

The debate was asking if white working class are wingers? Wright was claiming that all white working class people are council house wingers who read the Sun newspaper.

He hung up on two callers, but allowed a women to say "white working class people are wingers"

Wright claims to be middle-class.

“We of the sinking middle class may sink without further struggles into the working class where we belong, and probably when we get there it will not be so dreadful as we feared, for, after all, we have nothing to lose.”
- George Orwell (English Novelist and Essayist, 1903-1950)

It's not all bad Matthew Wright

From where I stand (OK, sit at present) the white working class ARE voiceless and their views and more importantly their needs are certainly NOT being addressed in parliament, but for that matter nor are the indigenous English as a whole.

It not particularly whiteness that makes you unheard - it's being British, and on low pay or no pay.

Our Community 'Leaders' are the local councils, and they're too busy pandering to the 'Ethnic Minority' groups to care about us.

Until the Local Elections come round that is....
