From the Consultation Response to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee inquiry on the economic impact of immigration on the UK economy: What impact has immigration had on the labour market, including wages, unemployment and other employment conditions…? UCATT so far has not come across hard evidence that employing migrant workers leads to a decrease of pay of British workers. Similarly, stories that employing migrant workers drives indigenous workers out of work is only anecdotal and has not been proved for the construction sector. Or here "Construction wage awards already agreed for the year ahead range from 4.5% for heating and ventilating operatives in October 2004 to 9.5% for building operatives in June 2005." Still, I'm sure you will be able to back up your "facts".

You are quite right Robin. Not only has eastern european immigration cut salaries - it has pushed up accommodation rents and property prices (shortage of accommodation as Poles and Czechs take flats and homes which would have gone to British people) and it has increased the national social security bill. The more eastern europeans here working for less money than our workers - the more of own workers end up unemployed and on the dole.

are not what is happening on the ground.UCATT are militant Labour supporters and will release any sort of nonsense that will back up the Govenment.Having worked in construction for over 40 years I can assure you it is currently at its lowest as far as moral is concerned. There have been NO pay increses for the last 6 years .This of course is as good as a pay cut when you take inflation into account. The insistance of govenment to put all building workers on PAYE has further decreased our take home pay with the increase of national insurance payments (immigrant workers are permitted to work on the CIS tax system where National insurance is a pittance)By the way Im staying put (for the time being ) |
