Because the companies are in league with the employment agencies to supply cheap labour for casual workers. The construction company I work for uses a Moldovan agency for labourers and a Polish one for tradesmen.

There is no advertising for jobs,if you need 2 brickies a plumber and 3 labourers tommorow its a phone call and they turn up. People turn up on site looking for work, the options are (A) Give them a job, which involves the tax office, national insurance, health and safety, employment laws, paid holidays.
Or (B) make a phone call

By the way all is not doom and gloom on the homefront. My eldest has been doing volantary work (its why the dole wont give him any money) for the last year and the charity will be sending him for vocational training in the new year.when he gets his qualifications they will put him on wages. The Youngest is going back to college now he has realised life is not a free ride......Happy days

Doesn't that mean we have priced ourselves out of that job market?

So you really do think it is our fault that companies want to use cheap labour?

One assumes from your posts that you are an educated man of some intellect.

Most of the people we are talking about don't fall into that category.

The government has taxed us out of the job market.

I'm sorry to seem obtuse, robin, but how do you mean? Do you mean by National Insurance and so on? this is interesting because I hve always maintained that people can not literally refuse jobs without having their benefits suspended.

I doubt you'll say that if you suddenly find yourself unemployed at 50+!

David H,

I mean that all the taxes we pay make us more expensive. Taxes are also inflationary.
If you had apples and I had pears we could trade by way of bartering. If a government comes along and insists that a tax had to be paid on our trade, we now need a currency. We also need to charge each other to get the wherewithal to pay the tax.Anybody else that wanted to trade with us would also be paying the tax, via us.
If that third party went to two others that did not pay tax to a government, he would not pay tax. The transaction would be cheaper. If we wanted to buy from that third party, he would be cheaper, because he does not pay tax.
The more the government wants in tax, the more expensive we would become.
