News Homes Will Raise Flood Risk
"Gordon Brown's plans to build thousands of extra new homes will increase the risk of flash flooding, worsen traffic congestion and damage the green belt, according to the Government's own advisors.
The assessment is contained in a report, commissioned by ministers, that exposes the environmental damage which would result from raising building targets. It comes as large swathes of the country lie under several feet of floodwater, and just days after the Prime Minister pledged to protect the green belt.
The report will embarrass ministers ahead of tomorrow's publication of a Green Paper on housing, which will spell out how the Government intends to reach Mr Brown's target of three million new homes by 2020."
