‘Councils attack migration figures’
The number of migrants entering the UK has been underestimated, say local authority leaders who fear it will mean public services will be hit. In a letter to the Treasury seen by the BBC, four leaders say a new method to calculate migrant numbers is flawed and shows “perverse results.” The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures determine funding for councils. The BBC’s Claire Marshall says the ONS acknowledge its methods for gathering the information are weak. Source: BBC 1 Television Ceefax analogue page 109, 14.5.2007 at 9.22 am. Britannist adds: This is the second time in the last few months in which the Office of National Statistics has been forced to admit that its figures may not be accurate. |
