Default 'Immigrants points system to start next year'

'Immigrants points system to start next year':

From today's Daily Mirror (brief extracts) "Only migrant workers with skills needed in the UK will be allowed to enter the UK in the New Year. Tier 1 (of the new immigration points system for getting into the UK), will cover highly-skilled migrants, such as scientists and entrepreneurs, and comes into force in 2008. It will be followed later in the year by tiers for workers such as nurses, teachers and engineers and for temps and young people on working holidays."

The Mirror said points would be awarded on age, ability, experience and the needs of various work sectors (just as they do in Australia). The newspaper said £20 million will be spent on new border and immigration officers but they might not be able to cope.

"Labour MPs are being swamped by complaints from constituents blaming migrant workers for keeping wages down, taking up social housing and adding to pressures in local schools" the Mirror reports today.

Bet nurses, teachers and engineers are pleased to see they are in a lower tier than 'highly skilled'.......

Default Points system is pointless says UKIP Chairman Dr. Whittaker

Just off the official UKIP website:

The government's plan to introduce a points system for granting UK visas was described today as "pointless".

The Chairman of UKIP, Dr. John Whittaker MEP, said, "The points system would work if it assessed applications for everyone who wants to live in the UK.

"But Mr. Byrne's system will have no effect either on illegal immigrants or people coming here from the European Union.

"Eastern europe is by far the largest source of recent immigration but the truth is, we have no control over that because it's Brussels and not the UK that sets the laws."

Dr. Whittaker added, "The government is trying to reduce the small number of legal immigrants from outside the EU in a vain attempt to compensate for those coming in from eastern europe."
