Default NHS translators

My sister is a medic in the NHS. She says that one of the areas of waste in the NHS is the cost of providing translators for patients who then can't be bothered to turn up. The translator has to be paid anyway.

Default Translation costs

Some of these people demanding that we, the British people, provide translations for them, have no right to be in the UK and are probably using bogus identfications and National Insurance numbers obtained illegally.

In other words - the only thing we should be translating are the words: You are here illegally. Get out of this country now before I call the police.

As for the ones who have entered the UK legally - I really do think that their embassies/high commissions in London could do more to publish translation material they could use - i.e. leaflets/booklets which list the most likely terminology (translated) which they would need to use while they are over here.

Here is the breif response from the head of resources concering the above qouted question.

"Thank you for your information request dated 21 December 2006 regarding the cost of Language Line over the last 5 years..

The Council does use the services of Language Line translation and has spent £5,724 on that service over 5 years. We are not aware of any forms printed in different languages during that period. Your question regarding adult education would need to be addressed to the Education Authority as this Council is not responsible for the delivery of education services."

I got made redundant in 2002 and had to sign on the
Swiss equivalent of the dole for four months.
I recieved a letter asking me to attend an interview.
It was written in French and German as I live in a
bi-lingual canton. It also stated in the letter that
if I did not have a good enough understanding of
either language, I would be required to be accompanied
by a translator at my own expense.
