Default 1300 e. europeans arrive every day at Victoria coach station

Over a thousand people a day are arriving in central London from eastern europe – the Daily Mail said on 1.12.2006. Reporter Sue Reid went to two coach stations at Victoria in the heart of the capital to watch arrivals over a twelve hour period last Friday and then again for another 12 hours on Saturday.

On the Friday, 51 coaches arrived at Victoria Coach station (and at the private Green Lines coach terminal nearby) from eastern europe – bringing into London 1113 bus passengers between dawn and dusk. The number who came to the two coach stations on coaches from eastern europe was even higher on the Saturday – 1590 people between dawn and dusk.

The Daily Mail reporter said that she had been told that Sundays “are even busier” at the coach stations. “On the basis of the arrivals I saw, 1300 people are coming by coach from eastern europe to London every day. – the equivalent of 9100 a week.”

The figure of 1300 a day works out at nearly 476, 000 people a year – close to the official figures on how many east europeans are here. The Daily Mail said that as well as arriving on coaches which had travelled to London directly from their home cities, east europeans were also coming into Victoria on coaches from airports (such as Gatwick, Stansted and Luton) where cheap flights arrive from eastern europe are routed to. Some east europeans were also using coaches from Amsterdam and Paris to London, the newspaper said.

Are you in Reading? That's the only town/city I've heard of (so far) which has a local daily newspaper doing such a thing.
